Magliano di Tenna

Historical background

The ancient classification calls Magliano di Tenna “Castrum Ultra Tomiam” a possession of the city of Fermo. Tradition asserts that, around the year 1000, a captain of fortune, named Malleano or Majano, was the founder of the castle. The ancient structure had six towers; now two remain, one of which is hexagonal.
The circular layout of the 14th-century walls reproduces the atmosphere of the old town. A dle Brandimarte quote asserts how the place name of Magliano would derive from the Roman family of “Manli.” Magliano remained under Fermano government until 1860.L’antica classificazione definisce Magliano di Tenna “Castrum Ultra Tomiam” possedimento della città di Fermo. L’antica struttura aveva sei torri; ora ne restano due, di cui una esagonale.
L’impianto circolare delle mura trecentesche riproduce l’atmosfera dell’antico centro storico. Una citazione dle Brandimarte asserisce come il toponimo di Magliano deriverebbe dalla famiglia romana dei “Manli”. Magliano è rimasta sotto il governo fermano fino al 1860.

Interesting to visit are the churches of: San Gregorio Magno, Madonna delle Grazie, and San Filippo. The church of St. Gregory the Great, rebuilt in the 18th century on an old Farfa building, is of pure neoclassical Renaissance style, soaring inside and frontally enriched by a superb facade. Inside it preserves a fresco attributed to Vincenzo Pagani, restored in 2007, depicting a Madonna with St. Catherine of Alexandria and St. Lucy. At the entrance to the village is the chapel of Our Lady of Grace, built in the 18th century, with 16th-century frescoes, including the Crucifixion.
The church of San Filippo, preserves the funeral monument of Fermo architect Giovanni Battista Carducci designed by Luigi Fontana. Also of interest are the Church of Our Lady of Loreto, the remains of the 14th-century walls, with two Towers and the Porta da Bora. Not to be missed is a walk, among charming narrow streets and small squares.

Monuments, churches

• Parish Church of St. Gregory the Great, built in the 18th century on the area occupied by an earlier building of Farfa origin, preserves a chapel of this building with a fresco once attributed to Vincenzo Pagani “Madonna holding Baby Jesus in her arms between St. Victoria and St. Lucia.”
• Church of Our Lady of Grace, built in the 18th century on a pre-existing 15th-century shrine, preserves 16th-century frescoes in the apse including a “Crucifixion.”
• Church of San Filippo, a funeral monument of Giovan Battista Carducci, a Fermo architect , by the sculptor Salomoni of Fermo (1919) is preserved there.
