Campofilone

Campofilone

Campofilone, a charming town in the Marche region of Italy, is renowned for the production of high-quality egg pasta. Its medieval village retains an authentic and charming atmosphere, while the surrounding hills offer breathtaking views and paths for pleasant nature walks.

The historic center of Campofilone rises on the top of a small hill, overlooking the Adriatic Sea, just 200 m above sea level and has an elliptical plan characteristic of villages developed within castle walls around the 11th century.

The street that cuts through the village in the center runs from the Abbey Church to Porta Marina; the two elliptical side streets (because they are parallel to the walls that have been preserved only in part), are continually cut by lanes and alleys, as a result, all the houses in the village (which were originally tower-houses) result with more or less trapezoidal plans.

The town developed from a village, formed in the early Middle Ages, around the Benedictine Abbey of St. Bartholomew. In the 12th century the monastery was subject to the bishopric of Fermo and remained there until 1342. The barrel-vaulted Via degli Orti, the Viale dei Pini and the Torrione di Porta Marina, Porta da Sole and Porta da Bora are obvious signs of the past. The Abbey Church, rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century, has a Greek cross plan. It was frescoed by Fontana and decorated with figures of saints, curtains and precious marble by his pupil Nicola Achilli. Also by Fontana are the frescoes in the Church of St. Patrick.

Campofilone is famous today for its “maccheroncini,” a typical egg pasta made totally by hand with rare skill by the women of the village. The very thin sheet of pasta is cut into very fine golden threads neatly arranged on sheets of paper. To the “Maccheroncini di Campofilone,” for which the request for EU IGP recognition has been submitted, a renowned national festival is dedicated every year in the first ten days of August.
