Pedaso

Pedaso

Pedaso offers a relaxing atmosphere and crystal clear sea. Its seafront promenade, with its golden beaches and characteristic bathing establishments, is ideal for unforgettable beach vacations. The ancient village, with its charming alleys, tells millennia-old stories.

Pedaso, during the Middle Ages, stood with its ancient castle on the hill overlooking the sea near the cliff called “la Cupa.” Like the other Fermani castles on the coast, it had the role of surveillance over the sea with a watchtower turned into a lighthouse in 1877. At the end of the 18th century, as a result of the continuous collapse of the old settlement, it began to develop down along the sea, where the seaside village was born, which still retains its initial urban layout.

Monuments, churches

  • Church of St. Mary and St. Peter the Apostle, neo-Gothic style, started in 1897, was finished in 1929; houses a “Holy Family” from 1750, canvas attributed to Filippo Ricci.
  • Lighthouse, built in 1877 and destroyed by the Germans during the last war only to be rebuilt later.
  • Small church, dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, the only place of worship until the early 1900s, was built between 1795 and 1797. Recently restored, it has a single nave and its interior is richly decorated.
  • Former municipal headquarters with tower and clock, in the historic center.
  • Astronomical Observatory, on Mount Serrone, features a photovoltaic power plant that powers it as well as a powerful observing instrument.
  • Marina, located near the mouth of the Aso River, is a dock equipped for small-scale fishing operators and pleasure boats.
  • 20th-century Songwriters’ Promenade, a nearly three-kilometer seaside path accessible from underpasses dedicated to the leading songwriters of our time. It connects the municipal territory of Pedaso with that of Campofilone.
  • Sentiero del Semaforo, a historic trail, recently reopened to the public that is located south of the town, near the Maritime Lighthouse. It connects the town to the top of Mount Serrone where the Semaforo, a guard post of the Navy, was installed.
  • Hydroelectric power plant, built in the second half of the 1920s, is located along State Road 16. Entirely clad in travertine, it is built in Art Nouveau style. It helps prevent the release of 5,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year into the atmosphere. Hydroelectric reservoir nature trail, a nature trail created in collaboration with Enel Green Power that runs along the banks of the reservoir that feeds the power plant. There are explanatory posters on how and how the new clean energy technologies work.
